The Cluckwell Process,
Step by Step

Every step is managed internally — no third-party contractors, no gaps in oversight. That's what makes Cluckwell different.

1

Flock Raising

Our chickens are raised on Iowa farmland in housing designed for bird welfare and productivity. Flocks receive quality, nutritionally balanced feed with no added growth hormones or steroids. Birds are monitored daily by trained farm staff and veterinary oversight is available throughout the grow-out period.

We source chicks from certified hatcheries and maintain biosecurity protocols to protect flock health from introduction of disease. Record-keeping on feed, medication use, and bird health is maintained for traceability purposes.

Key Points
  • Iowa farmland operations
  • No added growth hormones or steroids
  • Daily health monitoring
  • Veterinary oversight program
  • Biosecurity protocols in place
  • Complete feed and medication records
2

Transport to Facility

When flocks reach market weight, birds are caught and transported to our CC Iowa processing facility using humane handling protocols designed to minimize stress. Transport time is carefully managed to protect bird welfare and product quality.

Our catching crews are trained in low-stress handling techniques, and vehicles are equipped to maintain proper ventilation and temperature. Birds are held in lairage at the plant for ante-mortem inspection by the on-site USDA inspector before processing begins.

Key Points
  • Trained humane catching crews
  • Ventilated, temperature-managed transport
  • Minimized transport duration
  • Proper rest period at plant
  • USDA ante-mortem inspection
3

Processing

Our CC Iowa facility processes birds under continuous USDA FSIS inspection. The plant is designed to meet all federal requirements for poultry processing, with modern equipment and layout optimized for efficiency and food safety.

Processing includes stunning, harvesting, evisceration, inspection, and cutting/deboning as required by product specification. Each carcass receives post-mortem inspection by the USDA inspector. Our internal QA team conducts additional checks throughout the line.

Key Points
  • Continuous USDA FSIS on-site inspection
  • Post-mortem carcass inspection
  • Modern processing equipment
  • Internal QA team on every shift
  • HACCP Critical Control Points monitored
  • Sanitation and hygiene protocols

Quality Assurance & Packaging

After processing and chilling, product moves through our QA verification stage before packaging. Weight, trim, appearance, and temperature are verified against customer specifications. Products that do not meet spec are reworked or diverted.

Packaging is done in a clean environment with proper labeling including lot code, use-by date, and weight. Case packing and palletization follows customer-specific requirements for retail or foodservice distribution.

Key Points
  • Weight and trim verification
  • Temperature confirmation before packaging
  • Lot coding and traceability
  • Customer spec compliance checks
  • Labeling accuracy review
  • Case and pallet integrity
5

Cold Storage & Shipping

Finished product moves into refrigerated or frozen storage at our facility. Cold storage temperatures are continuously monitored, and product is shipped in temperature-controlled transport to maintain the cold chain from our dock to the customer's receiving dock.

We work with trusted transportation partners who meet our temperature management requirements. Shipping documentation including bill of lading and food safety certifications accompanies each load.

Key Points
  • Continuous cold storage monitoring
  • Temperature-controlled transport
  • Cold chain maintained dock to dock
  • Shipping documentation provided
  • Reliable, on-time delivery

When you own every step of the supply chain, you can guarantee standards that a contract processor simply can't. At Cluckwell, we don't hand off responsibility at any point — which means our customers get product they can depend on.

Vertical integration also means faster response when problems arise, complete traceability, and a team that's invested in the outcome at every stage of production.
